Helena Deland’s peculiar brand of bedroom pop is a welcome departure from her peers. Instead of thinking in certain themes or aesthetics within the restricting frameworks of albums or EPs, this Montreal-based musician puts a lot of care in making each song distinct in both its lyricism and sonics. Under the name From The Series Of Songs: Altogether Unaccompanied, she releases tracks in succinct volumes, each highlighting a certain shade or mood. Deland’s work is deceptive in its scope: supple synth-based pop alternates more guitar based lo-fi indie rock, performed live as a four-piece band. If you love pop music that says just enough to continue listening, then Deland’s Best Kept Secret-set will hit the spot.
