Aussie collective Gang of Youths met in church, which is one clear indication this bunch doesn’t exactly shun the heavy themes. Naming your band after one of Kierkegaard’s books is another. Indeed singer Dave Le’aupepe wrote some powerful songs about his wife’s illness, about his own suicide attempt and similarly arresting subject matter. However, Gang of Youths always let their stubborn optimism simmer through in rousing, grandiose songs, channeling paragons like Bruce Springsteen and Arcade Fire in the process. Indeed, a band who marries such deep philosophies with such iron-willed fortitude is a rare quality in rock these days.
