In the year 2019 Fontaines D.C. became one of this era’s defining bands. They shook Groningen out of its foundations with a show for the ages at Eurosonic, followed by incendiary, boisterous performances at Loose Ends, Lowlands and a sold-out Paradiso. Dogrel is the band’s vivid portrait of their hometown Dublin, as Grian Chattan’s lyrical prowess manages to channel both the erudite romance of James Joyce and W. B. Yeats as the more brazen punk rock idiom. These songs are as picturesque as they are primal: the gorgeous ‘Television Screens’, for example, easily evokes a monochrome autumn day at some watering hole, the rain clattering against the windowpane. The new album A Hero’s Death is coming soon.
